Non-Asbestos Fibre Materials: Overview and Applications
Non-asbestos fibre materials were developed to replace asbestos in gasket applications. Asbestos, known for its excellent heat resistance, was widely used in high-temperature environments. However, due to health risks associated with asbestos, alternative materials were needed to provide similar performance without the dangers. These non-asbestos materials are now commonly made from aramid fibres (such as Kevlar), carbon, and other inorganic fibres, which are blended with various polymers to suit specific applications. The most common polymer used is nitrile rubber, providing resistance to fuel and oil. These materials can also be graphite-coated for non-stick and steam resistance, mixed with PTFE for superior chemical resistance, or combined with EPDM for use in potable water applications.
